The Basics Journey

Our entry-level class, Little Stars, is all about boosting your child’s confidence whilst learning the foundations of Musical Theatre. Once your Little Star reaches Year 3 at school, they will graduate to Rising Stars the following January. With no pressure to perform on ‘The Big Stage’ just yet, here they will further develop their performance skills. However, if your Basics Star is particularly passionate and committed to performing, our programme offers students plenty of opportunities for progression. Rising Stars in Year 4 and above are invited to audition to graduate into our Shining Stars class (where students receive more intensive training) and eventually our Shooting Stars class (who rehearse for a theatre production each year) at regular intervals throughout the year. Many of our students will stay with us for their whole school lives, graduating to our incredible Senior group once they reach Year 9. Our team of staff feels privileged to support our students as they grow both as performers and as individuals during their time at Basics.

Commitment is a huge part of our teaching here at Basics, and regular attendance is essential. Each week, students work towards showcase content that builds over time, so missing classes doesn’t just affect their own progress – it impacts the whole group. When students aren’t present, they miss vital learning and may fall behind, while their absence also affects fellow students who are relying on them for group numbers and ensemble work.

We understand that occasional absences are sometimes unavoidable, and we kindly ask that you notify us in advance if your child is unable to attend. Please email info@basicsjuniortheatre.co.uk or message the Basics Facebook page before class.

Uniform

Once your child has attended a few Basics classes, we kindly request that parents purchase the Basics uniform. Our class uniform is a Basics t-shirt, jazz shoes & black joggers or leggings. Long hair must be tied back. There are many reasons we have a uniform, but the primary reason is to promote togetherness and pride in our classes. Therefore, we ask that all students wear their uniform to every class.

Your child will need the relevant t-shirt (£13.50) and a pair of black jazz shoes (£13.50 for small sizes up to 13 and £16.50 for sizes 1+). We have both in stock at the studio, so please place your order as soon as possible!

Arrival & Collection

Our address is as follows:
Basics Junior Theatre School, Dean Mill, Plumbe Street, BB11 3AG.
Upon arriving at the studio, please line up outside the building. Your child will be collected from here at the start of their class and escorted to meet you back here again at the end of their class.
After many years of experience, we find that children new to Basics settle much better when parents don’t accompany them into the building. All children must be dropped off and collected at the front door. Don’t worry, we’ll have lots of friendly faces from the Basics team on hand to reassure and guide our Little Stars! We ask for your trust, support, and cooperation in this matter. If your little performer is a little bit anxious, it might be a good idea to ‘prep’ them on you not accompanying them to their class before their first day, so they know what to expect. If your little performer is upset during their class, we will always give you a call and give them plenty of TLC.

Fees

To help parents with budgeting, we divide our fees equally over twelve months, making payments more manageable throughout the year rather than requiring three larger upfront payments at the start of each term.
This means that each monthly payment – payable on the first working day of the month via Direct Debit, regardless of the number of sessions in that specific month – contributes towards the total annual cost of the programme. As such, each term effectively consists of four monthly payments (three terms × four payments = twelve payments across the year).
Our classes operate on a termly basis, and each child’s place is reserved exclusively for them. This place cannot be reallocated during the term, ensuring consistency for all students and supporting the careful planning and delivery of our sessions.
To enable us to manage places responsibly and offer availability to families on our waiting list, we require a minimum of one full calendar month’s written notice if your child does not wish to continue into the following term. This notice period allows us sufficient time to contact and allocate the place to the next child.
Should a child leave partway through a term, fees for the remainder of that term will remain payable, as the place has been reserved and staffing commitments have been made accordingly.
Please note:
* A £5 + VAT charge will be applied to any failed Direct Debit payments to cover administrative and processing costs incurred.
* Late payments will incur daily interest on the outstanding balance at the prevailing UK statutory interest rate, calculated from the due date until payment is received in full.
* We reserve the right to instruct a debt collection agency to recover any unpaid fees. Any additional recovery or administrative costs incurred may be added to the outstanding balance.

Your child’s enrolment at Basics constitutes acceptance of these Terms & Conditions.

The only exception to our notice and term commitment policy applies to brand-new students joining Basics for the first time. We believe it is only fair that new families are given their first full term to decide whether their Basics journey will continue. After this initial term, our standard notice and fee policies apply.

We always strive to act in the best interests of our students and families, and we greatly value the support and understanding of our parent community. These policies allow us to continue delivering the high-quality care and training we are proud to provide.

We reserve the right to review and amend our fees at any time. Any changes to fees will be communicated to parents in writing. We will aim to provide one month’s notice before the revised fees take effect. Continued attendance after the notice period will constitute acceptance of the amended fees.

Mobile Phone Policy

At Basics Theatre School, we are committed to providing a focused, respectful, and professional learning environment where all students can thrive creatively and personally.

To support this, we operate a strict no-phone-use policy during all classes and rehearsals. While we understand that mobile phones are an integral part of modern life, their use during sessions has become an increasing distraction, both to the individual student and to the class as a whole.

This approach ensures consistency and fairness across all age groups.

To maintain focus:
Mobile phone use during classes disrupts concentration and prevents students from fully engaging in the professional-level coaching being delivered.
To uphold safety:
While students are in our care, it is our responsibility to ensure their well-being. Unmonitored phone use makes this more difficult and can lead to unsafe or unapproved communication.
To promote respectful behaviour:
Students must learn to give their full attention to instructors and peers. Avoiding phone use during class supports the development of professional habits and mutual respect.

If a parent or guardian needs to contact their child during class, or if a student feels unwell or needs to speak to a parent, communication should always be facilitated through a member of staff. We will also contact you directly in the event of any issue or emergency.

We believe that this policy will help students make the most of their time at Basics and create an environment where they can truly focus, grow, and enjoy the creative process without distraction.
